Bilbao Fantasy Film Festival (FANT 22) is just one month away now, all set to run 6 – 13 May, but horror fests always feel way to far off, right? So, to keep those pangs for horror and fantasy films at bay, the popular genre festival has once again planned a number of free events running April 27 -May 1 for the impatient festivalgoer.

Known as PRE-FANT, this year’s audiences will be treated to a series of French genre films together with a “Sitges Tour a Contracorriente” experience consisting of four popular films from last year’s Sitges festival.

PRE-FANT deets aside, even bigger news coming out of the FANT camp today is the announcement of the three official jury members. We think you’re gonna like them! Read on for all the particulars…

From the Press Release:
In collaboration with The French Institute of Bilbao, FANT will be screening a run of French films consisting of three features, Leos Carax’ cult 1986 film Mauvais sang, Lucas Belvaux’ Rapt (2009), Hélène Cattet and Fruno Forzani’s L’étrange couleur des larmes de ton corps [The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears] (2013) and a selection of fantasy short films. These sessions screen each day from 19:00, April 28 through May 1.

PRE-FANT will also serve up a further session of screenings, dubbed the “Sitges Tour a Contracorriente” experience providing festivalgoers with the chance to savour a few of the films that made waves at last year’s Sitges Film Festival. The four FANT selected films this year are Kristian Levring’s The Salvation, Cédric Anger’s La prochaine fois je viserai le coeur [Next Time I’ll Aim For the Heart], Brian James O’Connell’s hilarious vampire comedy Bloodsucking Bastards, and one of 2015’s biggest hits, Anouk Whissell, François Simard and Yoann-Karl Whissell’s Turbo Kid. These films will also screen at 21:15 at the amazing price of free until not a seat is left in the house.

In other exciting news, FANT is proud to announce a star-studded list of Official Selection Jury Members.

This year the three-member panel will consist of actress Fiona O’Shaughnessy, actor Laurence R. Harvey, and journalist and Canal+ programming manager José María Clemente.

José María Clemente, a journalist specializing in cinema, has been the official film-focused programming manager for CANAL+ for the past 11 years. He has also written for a number of documentary series and cinema-centric programmes for CANAL+ and has collaborated with the likes of VanityFair and GQ.

Fiona O’Shaughnessy began her career at The Gate Theatre, Dublin, back in 2000, where she played the lead in Oscar Wilde’s ‘Salomé.’ She is now best known for her role as Jessica Hyde in Channel 4’s critically acclaimed, ‘Utopia’ and has enjoyed a career across film, television and theatre. Her most recent feature, British horror comedy, Nina Forever (review), written and directed by the Blaine Brothers sees Fiona playing the titular role. She is currently shooting ‘My Mother and Other Strangers’ for the BBC and can be seen in ‘Musketeers’ later this year. Nina Forever will be screened as part of the #FANT22 line-up.

Last, but by no means least, is Laurence R. Harvey who, whilst making a name for himself on childrens TV in the ’90s, rose to fame in Tom Six’s The Human Centipede 2 (2011), playing Martin Lomax, an obese, asthmatic and mentally challenged security guard who is frighteningly obsessed with the original Human Centipede film. Harvey’s latest appearance is alongside genre favourite Tristan Risk in the James Bickert-directed Frankenstein Created Bikers, which screened at the Atlanta film Festival on the 2nd of April this year.
