Vampire Hunter D Returning in Both Anime and Live-Action FormThe latest issue of Rue Morgue brings the potentially intriguing news that Vampire Hunter D creator Hideyuki Kikuchi is planning to bring back the post-nuclear earth horseback-riding, sword-swinging, vampire-hunting dhampir in the form of both a new anime series and a live-action motion picture. In regards to the live-action feature, Kikuchi is working on it with the producer of the Biohazard video game, what gaijins like you and I call Resident Evil.

Vampire Hunter D began life as a manga series in 1983, became an anime movie released in 1985, and returned in a new anime motion picture in 2000. The rights for a live-action movie had previously been optioned by Spawn producer Mark Dippe. Presumably they have reverted back. One must assume this live-action movie in the works would be a Japanese production.

Thank goodness a Hollywood-produced live-action Vampire Hunter D never came about. I have a hard time imagining Hollywood producers allowing the character to retain his talking demon hand, and if they did, you just know it would have had the voice of Chris Tucker yelling stuff like “Talk to the hand!”

Expect more details to begin trickling out regarding the new Vampire Hunter D anime and movie in the near future.
