Doug Bradley and William Powell Discuss Bringing Horror to Las Vegas

Las Vegas is known for a lot of things: showgirls, gambling, and being the place where whatever sins you indulge in, no one at home has to know any better. What most people wouldn’t necessarily know is that Las Vegas is home to one of the cooler, more intimate places to check out comics and catch a screening of lots of horror/genre flicks – The Sci-Fi Center.

Started as a comic book venue by William Powell 17 years ago, The Sci-Fi Center has gone from being simply a place for those in the Vegas area to get their latest superhero fix to an establishment where you can meet up with like-minded genre fans.

Originally we had the idea of building a theater with the shop so that we could resurrect Rocky Horror Picture Show in Vegas since it had been dormant for a long time here,” explained Powell. “As the building process went on, I decided to go in a different direction than RHPS and make the space into a screening room where fans could come and see movies they may have never had the opportunity to see on the big screen.

We have a great community of fans here in Vegas, and it’s cool that The Sci-Fi Center now has a core group of people that will always come out and see whatever we have playing,” added Powell.

Powell’s approach with The Sci-Fi Center has always been to offer something different for fans, which is what he’s doing this week with his Hellraiser event featuring a live audio commentary with Doug Bradley.

Most horror fans would be surprised to learn that Bradley had never really done any audio commentaries for the Clive Barker franchise, and since Pinhead has such a distinctive voice within the horror community, Powell decided a few years ago to approach the actor to see if he’d be interested in doing a fan event in Las Vegas.

I first asked Doug about doing something at the shop back in 2007, and I knew he hadn’t done any commentaries beyond the Hellraiser box set,” Powell said. “That year, Doug came in and watched the original Hellraiser with the audience and did a Q&A, which was great, but I really wanted to do something different for the next time. So, in 2008, we had him do a live commentary during that screening, which was a great success, and I think he really enjoyed getting to give his own perspective on Pinhead and the Hellraiser world, too,” added Powell.

No one had ever approached me about doing this type of live commentary before William, and when he first asked me, I thought it was a brilliant idea,” said Bradley. “When we made the first few Hellraisers, it was the world of VCRs so the idea of all these extras you get now with DVDs wasn’t even a notion that anyone would consider.

I love doing these kinds of events because it’s really for the fans. When doing audio commentary, I like to do different things and tell stories they may not have heard, or I’ll even pause it during certain parts so that I can go in-depth if I feel like it. I always encourage fans to ask questions then, too, because I think it adds something to the whole experience for everyone,” Bradley added.

Bradley will be appearing at The Sci-Fi Center on Tuesday, December 15th, at 6 pm for the Hellraiser: Bloodlines audio commentary event. He will also be signing autographs after the screening for a very minimal $10 charge per item (compared to some cons that charge you $40 a pop, that’s a treat!) and meeting with fans.
