M. Night Shyamalan Reanimating Tales from the Crypt for TNT

Twist master M. Night Shyamalan made his return to the horror genre with last year’s The Visit, which reestablished the forgotten fact that he’s a pretty damn good filmmaker. Today brings a HUGE update on his career, as Shyamalan is partnering with TNT for a “Tales from the Crypt” revival.

SAY WHAT?!

Per THR, the Turner-owned cable network is ordering a two-hour horror block that will be curated by M. Night Shyamalan and led by “Tales from the Crypt.” For now, details about the project are quite minimal, though the programming block will consist of short and long-form storytelling.

The “Tales from the Crypt” segment is said to be based on the original and feature new stories — all exec produced by Shyamalan and his Binding Edge Pictures partner, Ashwin Rajan. Rather than being a straight series, the hour-long endeavor will instead be an “umbrella” for “many shows” in a variety of different genres. Shyamalan will likely direct the first outing of the two-hour block. There are four properties currently in the works to be part of the block.

“This is a new genre for us in our series efforts and a great chance to partner with M. Night Shyamalan, whose blockbuster hit The Visit reminded movie audiences and critics this past summer that he truly is a master of horror,” said Sarah Aubrey, Executive VP Original Programming at TNT. “This two-hour horror block demonstrates not only TNT’s commitment to working with today’s top talents, but also our strategy to stand out in today’s marketplace by challenging the conventional rules of programming and scheduling.”

I couldn’t be more excited to be teaming up with Kevin Reilly, Sarah Aubrey, and the entire TNT team in this unique endeavor,” said Shyamalan. “To be part of such a beloved brand like ‘Tales from the Crypt,’ something I grew up watching, and to also have the chance to push the boundaries of genre television as a whole, is an inspiring opportunity that I can’t wait to dive into.”

It’s hard to say what exactly TNT is going for here, but we are SO on board!
