Universal Eyeing Angelina Jolie for The Bride of Frankenstein

Few studios are busier right now than Universal, as they’re hard at work prepping a cinematic universe centered around their monster movie properties. Reboots of The Mummy, The Wolfman, Dracula and Van Helsing are in the works, and so too is a new take on The Bride of Frankenstein.

Per THR, Universal is keen on Angelina Jolie playing the monster’s bride, and they report that part of the reason the studio funded the actress’ recent film By the Sea is because they were hopeful it would encourage her to sign on the dotted line. At the moment, however, no deal has been inked.

Producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are the architects of the expanded universe, and they recently spilled some beans about the massive project.

The idea is that we have a deep bench of brains to consult with about how their monster fits into our world as we go forward,” Kurtzman explained. “We’re creating a mythology, so we’re looking at this canon and thinking, ‘What are the rules?’ What can we break, and what are the ones that are untouchable?

Universal’s big plan is for a new monster movie to come out each year, and the films will update the classic stories for modern times while retaining familiar elements. Much like in The Avengers universe, those individual characters will not necessarily be confined to their own movies.

The characters will interact with each other across movies,” added Donna Langley, chair of Universal Pictures. “We’re incubating it at the moment, and we’re taking the time to get it right.”

The brand new Mummy film will begin shooting in early 2016.
