John Erick and Drew DowdleBrothers John Erick and Drew Dowdle, whose [REC] redux Quarantine was awarded a Grimmy for Best Zombie Film during last Tuesday evening’s Reaper Awards, are about to embark on their next project, a horror-thriller based on an M. Night Shyamalan story entitled Devil.

According to Variety Universal Pictures has set Chris Messina to star in Devil, [and] production begins in Toronto on October 26. Devil is being produced by Shyamalan and Sam Mercer. It is the first pic in a deal between Shyamalan and Media Rights Capital to create Night Chronicles, a banner that will hatch one genre film per year for the next three years.

Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night) wrote the script, and the Dowdles will be exec producers. The plot is being kept under wraps, but sources said Messina plays the lead role of Bowden, a sobered-up homicide detective.

**UPDATE**: THR has just provided a slew of casting details for the project: Logan Marshall-Green (Richard Heller on “24”), “Big Love”‘s Jenny O’Hara, Jacob Vargas (Death Race-2008), Matt Craven (Happy Birthday to Me, Disturbia), Bojana Novakovic (Drag Me to Hell), Bokeem Woodbine (“Saving Grace”), video game voice actor Geoffrey Arend, and French-Canadian actress Caroline Dhavernas are all set to join Messina on Devil.

No telling how the titular “Devil” plays into things, but as soon as we learn more, so will you.
