Universal Hires Writers to Reboot Van Helsing
Universal Studios is currently hard at work on rebooting all of its monster movie properties, bringing them together into one shared universe. Up first is a brand new take on The Mummy, set in the present day, and now we’re learning that Van Helsing will also join the fun. Read on!
Per Variety, Universal has hired scribes Jon Spaihts and Eric Heisserer to co-write the Van Helsing reboot, being produced by universe architects Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan. How the film will work into the greater picture is still being mapped out, and plot details are currently unknown.
The titular character first appeared in Bram Stroker’s Dracula and dedicated his life to killing the monster. In 2004, Hugh Jackman starred in an adaptation in which Van Helsing was made out to be a monster hunter, not only hunting Dracula but having run-ins with Frankenstein and the Wolf Man.
Similar to the Marvel and Transformers universes, Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) and Eric Heisserer (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2010, The Thing 2011) were among a handful of writers Universal assembled for its monster universe writers room, with Spaihts also penning The Mummy.
