Vampire Diaries Gives The CW Its Best Premiere Ever
The jury’s still out as far as we’re concerned as to whether or not “The Vampire Diaries” has what it takes to catch on with hardcore horror fans, but they may not need us anyway … The show’s first episode that aired last night appears to be The CW’s most-watched series premiere ever with 4.8 million viewers (subject to final verification later today).
To me, the show had its share of ups and downs. It started off strong, got a little too “emo” in places, but then managed to poke fun at itself and lightened up the mood at just the right time. Plus, Ian Somerhalder as mopey vamp Stefan (Paul Wesley)’s bad boy brother, Damon, should be amping things up as the season progresses. And best of all? Steve McQueen’s grandson (Steven R. McQueen, who plays troubled human teen Jeremy) showed some potentially decent acting chops. And also, the worst actress of the bunch got attacked, which hopefully means she won’t be speaking much in upcoming episodes, proving no one is safe from executive producer Kevin Williamson’s manifestation of the “darkness that lies underneath this town” as he promised during the network’s press tour for the show.
Unfortunately, according to The Live Feed on THR, “The Vampire Diaries” didn’t seem to much help the premiere of “Supernatural” (3.4 million), which was down 18% from last year. That shocks me, but it could just be that a lot of people recorded it to watch later.
In any event, we’ll be keeping tabs on “Diaries” in hopes that we reach Williamson’s guaranteed “fork in the road” that makes the show unique from the “paint-by-numbers girl-meets-vampire shtick” sooner rather than later.
