Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters Sequel Scrapped by Paramount

As much as I loved director Tommy Wirkola’s 2013 action/horror hybrid Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, I had a sneaking suspicion we’d never get a sequel. Despite grossing over $226 million at the international box office, Deadline is reporting that Paramount Pictures has officially scrapped the Witch Hunters follow-up. Considering that star Jeremy Renner is now one of Marvel’s golden boys, the chances were incredibly slim that he would return anyway. Insert audible sigh here.

However, the studio isn’t kicking the franchise to the proverbial curb entirely. Rumor has it that Paramount is keen on developing Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters for the small screen. The folks at  Paramount TV would produce the series with Gary Sanchez. Assuming, of course, that Witch Hunters finds a network to give it a home. Given the popularity of genre properties on television, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this one eventually comes together in one form or another.

Still, it would have been awesome to see Renner and Gemma Arterton together again for a sequel. At least I own the first one on Blu-ray. I can watch it and dream about what may have been.
