Sam Raimi Talks Original Evil Dead 4 Plans; Two Bruce Campbells?!

It’s nothing short of a miracle that Bruce Campbell is finally reprising his most iconic role in this year’s TV series “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” which was beginning to feel like something that would never actually happen. Plans for an Evil Dead 4 had been rumored over the years, and now we can imagine what could’ve been.

As reported by Screen Crush, Sam Raimi attended a recent screening of the upcoming series as part of the promotional tour, and during a Q&A session, he spoke about his original plans for Evil Dead 4. What he revealed is delightfully bonkers, and we think you’re going to dig it.

Hardcore fans of the franchise have likely seen the alternate ending to Army of Darkness, which saw Ash drinking a magical potion and accidentally being transported ahead in time – rather than back to 1992. He awakens in the midst of a post-apocalyptic landscape, hair long and beard massive.

Universal wasn’t a fan of the downbeat finale and opted instead for the one that hit screens here in the States – Ash finds himself back at S-Mart in the present day – but there was a time when Raimi was dead set on the alternate ending being the official one. Which could’ve led to a crazy sequel.

Before ‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ fell into place, [Sam] and his brother, Ivan, were working on a script for a fourth Evil Dead movie,” writes Screen Crush’s Matt Singer, “and at that point, their bold plan was to actually make a movie starring two Ashes, one from each of Army of Darkness’ endings. In other words, this Evil Dead 4 would have continued Ash’s journey along both possible timelines in two parallel stories: Present Ash in one, future Ash in the other.”

Ultimately, the wacky idea was deemed too confusing, and the ending to Army of Darkness was of course changed. You can check out both endings below while you picture how wonderfully insane the never-made Evil Dead 4 could’ve been!
