R.L. Stine’s Fear Street Not Heading to the Big Screen… Yet
R.L. Stine is all the rage right now. Not content with letting Sony have all the fun with Goosebumps, a story was rumored last week that Fox is adapting his other popular young adult horror series, Fear Street.
Details were scarce, and that made us kind of suspect, which is why we didn’t report on it. Arrow in the Head caught up with Stine to get the skinny. Hint: Temper your excitement, folks.
“I hope it turns out to be true, and I hope to be able in a few weeks to say, yes, we’re doing a Fear Street movie. But at this point, there’s no contract, it shouldn’t have been leaked, it’s not news. It’s just a rumor, really. This Fear Street thing is just ridiculous; someone leaked it because of all the Goosebumps publicity.”
The Fear Street series was launched in 1989 and ran for over 100 books. It sold around 80 million copies worldwide, bringing total sales of Stine’s books to over 480 million.
The series was somewhat similar to Goosebumps in that they were usually self-contained horror stories, albeit targeting more mature audiences, allowing for higher levels of violence and gore, which should make for an interesting adaptation.
We’ll keep you updated on Fear Street as it develops.
