Writer/director Peter Sullivan’s horror flick Ominous premieres this weekend on Syfy. So if you already have plans to do something else during prime time, kick them to the curb and plant your behind on the couch. Otherwise, you could feel more than a little left out whenever everyone’s talking about Barry Watson’s performance around the water cooler on Monday.

Need a synopsis? We’ve got a pretty big one for you to digest:

Michael (Barry Watson, The Boogeyman) and Rachel (Esme Bianco, “Game of Thrones”) live a charmed life in an upscale suburban neighborhood with their seven-year-old son, Jacob (Gavin Lewis). One day Jacob is struck in a tragic car accident. He’s rushed to the hospital, where he succumbs to his injuries, leaving his two loving parents devastated.

Returning home after the funeral, Michael and Rachel are confronted by a mysterious Stranger (Mark Lindsay Chapman, Swamp Thing) who offers them the chance to get their son back. All they have to do is bring him the body and promise to protect the boy at all costs. Michael is skeptical, but Rachel is determined to give it a shot. What have they got to lose?

Digging Jacob’s body up from the cemetery during a driving rain storm, the two bring it back to the Stranger. Sure enough, the next morning, Jacob wakes up like nothing ever happened. While his parents are thrilled to have their son home, their usually loving dog Bruce is clearly upset about Jacob’s return. He growls threateningly at the boy, and when he lunges to attack, Jacob reaches out and snaps his neck in a single move.

Indeed… there’s something different about this “new” Jacob!

As months pass, the family moves to a new house in a new town under an assumed name in order to avoid scrutiny about their son’s miraculous resurrection. However, Jacob’s behavior gets even stranger. He’s started talking to himself in the middle of the night, and Michael discovers that he’s been mutilating birds in the back yard.

When a family trip to church one fateful Sunday turns into a raging inferno, Michael decides something has to be done. He confronts a priest, Father Francis (Eric Etebari, “Witchblade”), who has been following them. Father Francis admits that he has indeed been watching them and tells Michael the truth. The Stranger who resurrected Jacob is part of a secret society that’s been trying for generations to give birth to the Devil in human form. Jacob is their latest attempt. If Michael doesn’t kill him, the demonic child will eventually become too powerful to stop. Michael tries to convince Rachel about what he’s learned, but she won’t believe him. She’s thankful for the second chance they got and grows resentful of Michael’s attempts to undermine their happiness.

As the death toll continues to rise suspiciously, the two parents find themselves on opposite sides: Michael trying to stop Jacob and Rachel trying to protect him. When Michael’s attempt to kill Jacob backfires miserably, Rachel flees with Jacob to the Stranger’s “safe haven,” an old building in the middle of the city. In a standoff with police, she witnesses Jacob’s dark power first-hand and realizes what a mistake she’s made. Unfortunately… it’s too late. Michael rescues Rachel from Jacob and the Stranger, and the two flee for home, where they have one final confrontation with the demon pretending to be their son.

Will the once loving parents be able to kill their demonic child once and for all, or will the powers of darkness triumph?
