Director Sean Cain is back with another tale of winged horror entitled Terror Birds, and right now we have the first exclusive stills for you and a whole lot more! Read on!

Directed by Cain, written by Jake Helgren, and featuring FX from Joseph Lawson, Terror Birds stars Greg Evigan (Megaconda, TekWar), Leslie Easterbrook (Lavalantula, The Devil’s Rejects), Jessica Lee Keller (Disney’s Teen Beach), Lindsey Sporrer, Dillon Cavitt, Evan Miller, and Sarah Joy Byington. Kevan Otto and Jake Helgren are producing the film for Mar Vista Entertainment. Terror Birds was shot over 12 days just outside of Austin, TX, at Spiderwood Studios and Trail’s End.

I was contacted out of the blue by the producers, Kevan Otto and Jake Helgren, after they watched the trailer for Jurassic City,” said Cain. “It was their first foray into monster movies along with Mar Vista Entertainment, and they wanted to find someone who was experienced in that field. Having worked in the past with American World Pictures, CineTel, and Titan Global on their monster movies, I knew a thing or two about a thing or two.

We were looking at many different locations at the beginning. Bouncing back from Texas to Tennessee to California and finally back to Texas. Our producer Jake Helgren originally grew up in the area so we settled there, not only because the locations were gorgeous, but he had a direct line to local talent having shot a number of films there in the past.

Cain continues, “Although we flew our ‘names’ out of Los Angeles, like Greg Evigan, Leslie Easterbrook, and Jessica Lee Keller, most of the actors were cast from the Austin area; and I was quite pleased at the pool of folks I was able to see during our auditions there. Having had some experience living and working in Texas (my first short film, South of Heaven, was shot in Houston, TX, with Lew Temple [‘The Walking Dead,’ The Devil’s Rejects] as the lead), I already had met some really great people out there.

Working with Greg was great. My first monster movie I edited was Sand Sharks, which starred his daughter, Vanessa. So when I mentioned that to him, he thought that was really cool. He really got into the role of Harvey and was always looking for ways to bring him alive.

I already knew Leslie in real life and recently did some editing on her latest film, Lavalantula,” said Cain. “I had wanted to work with her for quite some time, and thanks to my friend Aine Leicht, I was able to get her on to this film. She and Greg worked really well together, and I think she rather enjoyed —SPOILER ALERT— her very graphic death sequence!

Jessica Lee Keller was definitely the backbone of the movie. Such a solid performer, and any time she’s on camera the scene just pops. I wasn’t aware of these Teen Beach movies she did for Disney, but I guess there’s quite a following with the pre-teens. Any time she would post a picture to Instagram from the set, they would be all over it with ‘likes’ and comments. One comment in particular cracked me up where someone said, ‘You are perfect.’ So to tease her, I would leave that same comment on whatever she posted.

It was the first time I had worked on a film away from Los Angeles so that was interesting. I spent 19 days in Bastrop, TX, which is about 25 minutes outside of Austin. It was very hot and humid, and most of our shooting took place outside during the day. There was a bit of an acclimation period for myself where if I didn’t pass out after Day Two, I figured I would be okay for the rest of the shoot. Although the crew from LA was put into a little fleabag motel just off the highway so when I got ‘home’ at night, I looked around at the sketchy neighbors and was thankful I was able to make it safely inside my room. Ahh, the glamour of filmmaking!

As for the FX, I will be working with the very capable Joseph Lawson, who I’ve teamed up in the past on numerous projects like Jurassic City. He’s the in-house FX honcho over at The Asylum, but unlike most of those films, we give him ample time to really work on the CGI creatures to make them amazing. I’ve already seen their 3D turntable (a rendering of the creature that spins 360 degrees) for the Terror Birds, and I’m really excited about the final production. There will be a male and female both with slightly different coloring.
