Bill Murray Likely Not Playing Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters Reboot
It was finally confirmed this past weekend that original Ghostbusters star Bill Murray will indeed be making a cameo appearance in Paul Feig’s reboot, which had many excited that we’d be seeing Peter Venkman up on the big screen one more time. Alas, that doesn’t appear to be the case.
Birth. Movies. Death. reports that Murray’s mystery Ghostbusters role was revealed in the screenplay, which indicates that he will likely be playing a brand new character named Martin Heiss.
“Martin Heiss is a professional supernatural debunker, a sort of an Amazing Randi type, who shows up and ‘proves’ the new Ghostbusters are fakes,” writes the site. “It’s a really tiny role, and it’s sort of the mirror image of where we meet Peter Venkman at the start of Ghostbusters II.”
Of course, it’s entirely possible that the script was changed once Murray agreed to come on board, so I suppose there’s still a small glimmer of hope that Venkman will return. We shall see.
In Ghostbusters, Melissa McCarthy is Abby Yates, Kristen Wiig is Erin Gilbert, Leslie Jones is Patty Tolan, and Kate McKinnon is Jillian Holtzmann.
Wiig and McCarthy play a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. Flash-forward a few years and Wiig lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia U. Which is pretty sweet, until her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia.
Wiig reunites with McCarthy and the other two proton pack-packing phantom wranglers, and she gets some sweet revenge when ghosts invade Manhattan and she and her team have to save the world.
The Ghostbusters reboot will haunt the big screen on July 15, 2016.
