The Strain Creators Reveal Five-Year Plan; More Flashbacks to Come!
As someone whose DVR is always jam-packed, I appreciate a showrunner like Carlton Cuse, who typically announces an end date to his TV projects. If I’m going to invest my time, I want to know a payoff is coming… which is what we’ve been promised for “The Strain.”
Per TVLine, Cuse told the Television Critics Association that just like “Bates Motel” before it, “The Strain” will be strictly a five-season limited series. “Season 3 will be 10 episodes, and then Seasons 4 and 5 will be 10 episodes each, and that will be the end,” Cuse said.
The source material for the in-process Season 2 and just announced Season 3 is the second novel in Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s The Strain trilogy. The presumed 4th and 5th seasons will be based on the third and final book.
With regard to guest star Samantha Mathis’ Councilwoman Feraldo meeting up with our rag-tag group of regulars, Cuse said, “Oh yes, absolutely.” Then he gave us a chill with the ominous warning: “There are a lot of analogies in our show to the rise of National Socialism in Germany… Totalitarian leaders don’t arise randomly; they arise with the support of the populace, and in a difficult situation you turn to people who will solve your problems. That’s the role of this character.”
We can also expect more flashbacks. Cuse said, “We love the flashback — some are allegorical, some are filling in mythological details, some are resonant. We have a Roman flashback… coming up, and it’s pretty badass!”
One thing you shouldn’t expect is a spinoff of any sort. del Toro quipped, “We fear enough every week!,” and Cuse confirmed, “We haven’t talked about that at all.”
If you missed it earlier, in the upcoming Episode 2.05, “Quick and Painless,” Corey Stoll goes au naturel and ditches his character’s much reviled wig to go undercover and try to convince the authorities about what’s going on. We have a look at the new and improved Eph below.
“The Strain” Episode 2.05 – “Quick and Painless” (airs 8/9/15)
Eph (Corey Stoll) changes his appearance to leave the city while Nora (Mia Maestro) is left as the reluctant parent for Zack (Max Charles).
Meanwhile, Dutch (Ruta Gedmintas) and Nora make a deal with Justine (Samantha Mathis) to secure Fet’s (Kevin Durand) release from jail.
