Zombie movie rule number one: If you’re going to make a flick about zombies, try to do something different. “The Walking Dead” and AMC’s upcoming spinoff “Fear the Walking Dead” pretty much have the market cornered on the whole “group of survivors battling the undead” scenario. You’ve gotta bring something wholly original to the table; otherwise, you’re going to get lost in the shuffle.

Writer/director Ryan Coonan and co-writer Richard Barcaricchio seem to thoroughly understand this concept. And while some naysayers might be quick to label their short film Waterborne as nothing more than a one-note gimmick, it’s actually a lot of fun and an absolute pleasure to watch. And, yes, there is a zombie kangaroo. There’s no false advertising happening here, folks.

This synopsis will give you a better idea of what’s going on.

Waterborne is set in a world where years of drought, flood, and fluctuating environmental conditions have taken their toll on small country town. When a local ranger finds an unidentified algae overwhelming the water supply, he realizes that something’s not right – but it’s not until the sun goes down that he discovers the true extent of the danger. On a dark, lonely country road that evening, the ranger meets with a zombie kangaroo – the real star of Waterborne and the first ever zombie kangaroo to appear on film.

If you’re tired of my jabbering and you want to get to the zombie kangaroo, then feast your eyes on the video embedded below. It’s a fun ride all the way through. In my humble opinion, of course. But don’t take my word for it! Check out Waterborne for yourself right now.
