We recently spoke with producer Jason Blum about what’s cooking with the latest entry in the Paranormal Activity franchise, and he dropped a bombshell on us… The end of an era is upon us! Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension will be the last film in the franchise. Read on for the full interview and the newly released trailer.

We’re going to end this with a bang,” Blum tells us. “We wrap up almost all of the loose ends with this one. As we kept going on and on, I began to feel as if the whole ‘teasing’ thing had run its course. Fans had gotten to the point at which they were telling us to stop posing more questions and start giving us answers. That’s what this film does.

Blum continues, “We really wanted to make this one a bit different and step outside of the mold. For the first time fans will see Toby [the franchise’s demon] and finally get the specifics they’ve been looking for. We didn’t want to grind this franchise into the ground. We’re not waiting to see how this one does to see if we should make another one. This is it, and it feels good and cool to say that. We’ve done it. Hopefully people would be satisfied by the movie.

We’ve all heard people say similar things like that before so we joked with Jason and said, “Yeah, until the remake!” Blum laughed and said, “Right? That’s a long ways away! I’ll be long gone by then!”

From there Blum reflected a bit on the franchise…

I think Paranormal Activity really kickstarted the supernatural sub-genre’s popularity. Prior to the film things like Saw and extremely real world violent films were the rage. Thanks to Paranormal… for better or for worse… we saw a lot of found footage movies come to light. Strangely, that didn’t happen as much when Blair Witch came out, but I think back then the technology just wasn’t caught up. Now that it has, it’s become apparent that with Paranormal’s success, found footage films were going to be here in a big way across multiple genres. They’re tapering off a bit now, but they’re not ever going to go away. The franchise also proved that anyone with the right amount of imagination and talent can make a movie that can be successful. It doesn’t happen very often, but yes, it CAN happen. People point to Paranormal Activity as a great example of that. The film proved you can make a good film and utilize technology in a way that was very inexpensive. The movie changed a lot of perceptions!

With Paranormal Activity drawing to a close, we inquired what Blum feels could be the next big sub-genre to take off.

“It’s really too early to tell, but I think bloodier movies are coming back, what with the success of films like The Purge and Evil Dead. Supernatural films are still kicking some ass out there though, but I feel things are swinging back to a more grounded and bloody type of horror. Again… way too early to really get a clear picture.”

Gregory Plotkin’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension will open on October 23, 2015.
