Akira Adaptation Lands Sons of Anarchy Writer Marco J. Ramirez

Oh, boy. Here we go again. Despite an immense amount of backlash from the internet upon its announcement, Warner Bros. still seems hellbent on developing a live-action version of the Japanese manga Akira. The project continues to hit speed bumps along the way, but these hiccups aren’t stopping the studio from moving forward. I’m still on the fence about it.

However, things are seemingly moving in the right direction at the moment. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner just tapped “Sons of Anarchy” scribe Marco J. Ramirez to pen the script for Akira. Ramirez is also helping out with the second season of Netflix’s surprisingly strong superhero series “Daredevil,” which is certainly pretty good news. Assuming, of course, you’re a fan of “Sons of Anarchy.” Otherwise, you’re probably irritated or indifferent.

Although Appian Way is still producing Akira, it’s currently unclear who will helm the project. Director Jaume Collet-Serra — a man who seems to have a thing for Liam Neeson — was attached at one point, but that’s apparently no longer the case. It’s also unknown who will star in the feature, but Warner better tread lightly. If the studio whitewashes the flick, folks won’t be too happy.

That said, Ramirez’s involvement in the Akira adaptation seems like a sign that Warner and company are taking this thing seriously. However, a lot happens between the page and the screen, so here’s hoping everything falls into place. Fans definitely won’t tolerate anything less.
