8 Horror Podcasts That Will Turn Your Year Around

I listen to a lot of horror podcasts. I have managed to squeeze a few into a list, or two, or three during my time here. However, there are still so many I love but haven’t had the time to tell y’all about yet. This is why I figured a top 10 list highlighting more of the best podcasts was what this holiday season needed. I mean, what is a better time to start a show than while you’re hiding from your family during the holidays? As usual, none of these are on a network, and this list excludes shows hosted by people who work at Dread Central. Even with those filters though, there are too many amazing shows, and I am listening to my best life!

¡UY QUE HORROR! A Latinx Horror Movie Podcast

Description:

In this spooky podcast, Jonathan Atkinson and Aileen Clark explore the often-overlooked world of Latinx horror films. Every week, they watch a different horror film, whether it comes from a Latin American country; is directed by a Latinx director; or has a Latinx star as its lead. If it’s Latinx horror, Jonny and Aileen will watch it!

What I Love About It:

Not only am I here for Jonathan and Aileen’s decades-long friendship, but it’s also cool to find out how many movies we owe to someone(s) in the Latin community. This October, they covered The Blair Witch Project and used co-director Eduardo Sanchez to tie it back to their mission. We’ve all seen this movie, but I’m probably not alone when it comes to knowing who the co-director is or that he’s Cuban. This show is another fun and informative one for your list.

Attack of the Queerwolf!

Description:

Hosts Michael Kennedy, Nay Bever, & Brennan Klein dissect horror faves, from classic to problematic, dish on their favorite weekly offerings, and discuss queer identity.

What I Love About It:

I was hella late to the Queerwolf party, but it works out because they’re not currently on a network. So I can put them on this list! The drawback is they no longer have a regular schedule anymore. However, when they popped up with a Scream (2022) or the catch-up reminding us to get information for Queer For Fear, it makes it more special. This podcast is doing what many of us think we are doing before we purchased our first microphones.

Bloodhaus

Description:

The show where we discuss arthouse horror movies but in a fun, not at all snobby way. Hosted by Joshua Conkel and Drusilla Adeline.

What I Love About It:

I’m not well-versed in arthouse horror because I am a heathen. Listening to Dru and Josh is like having laughs at brunch with friends, but I walk out a smarter horror nerd. I love their dynamic, but I especially love how some episodes Dru will casually pour tea which sends me on a Google search about an actor or director. I highly recommend this show for film buffs, aspiring horror historians, or if you want to hear people talk about movies off the beaten path.

Gorefriends

Description:

Join besties Story and Mars as they do in-depth analyses of all types of horror films. From the folklore to the gore, your gorefriends got you covered!

What I Love About It:

This duo has been around since April 2019 and is still having a damn good time. Each episode is delightful, and I often find myself legitimately giggling. Every time I drop in, I feel like I’m in a friend’s house as they catch me up on a movie they have seen since the last time we hung out. Story and Mars also have very soothing voices that make the scary less terrifying.

Scream Kingz Podcast

Description:

Join TaMon, Bobby, Mark, and Mike on Wednesdays for the scream you’ve been waiting for.

What I Love About It:

This podcast is like if all of the avengers were Black & Queer and assembled to cut up instead of destroying a major city. This podcast sees some of our favorite horror content creators get together to discuss topics like Final Boys, Dating Non-Horror Fans, and Horror In Television. Scream Kingz also shakes it up by being a Youtube podcast, which makes it feel even more like hanging out with friends because you can see them react in real time.

Slayerfest ’98

Description:

A Queer Latinx Buffy the Vampire Slayer Podcast that occasionally covers Marvel.

What I Love About It:

I have been dropping in and out of this podcast for years. I was a HUGE Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, so would fall into anything discussing the show. The show originally did lovingly critical deep dives on Buffy and Angel but has started to branch out into the Marvel universe. I’m not going to get into my rant about how the genre is a large umbrella, so this makes sense. However, I will say they also handle those episodes with care while having fun, too.

We Die First

Description:

A podcast made for Black horror fans by Black horror fans. Hosted by Andrew & Seynique.

What I Love About It:

Andrew and Seynique both have backgrounds in comedy. Which helps find the humor in the genre that isn’t the kindest to Black horror fans. Their friendship also allows them to poke fun at each other in a way that allows us to laugh with them, instead of laughing at them. Sometimes I get wrapped up in their catch-up sessions and forget they’re also going to cover a movie.

What A Scream!

Description:

A horror movie podcast where the host Ygraine and a special guest discuss and dissect horror movies that perfectly embody that week’s randomly chosen theme.

What I Love About It:

Ygraine is one of the most delightful hosts in the game. The themes are randomly chosen, so we often hear subgenres that are not her favorite. She manages to find the humor in that too, as she tries to give them another chance. Because the show has a revolving door of guests for Ygraine to bounce off of, it keeps it fresher and more exciting than most solo podcasts.
