‘Evil Dead Burn’s’ Luciane Buchanan Took Inspiration for Her Deadite Performance from Sources that Will Delight Fans

I’m still smiling after seeing Evil Dead Burn. Sébastien Vaniček’s sequel is a ferocious banger, continuing the franchise’s consistent streak of good-to-great Evil Dead movies.

One of my favorite elements of the film comes from Luciane Buchanan‘s performance as Tia/a Deadite (she’s prominently featured in the trailers for a reason). The franchise has a long history of memorable Deadite performances. I had the chance to sit down with Buchanan, so, of course, I had to ask…did she take any inspiration from previous performances in the franchise for her Deadite portrayal?

You know, I’m a big fan of Jane Levy’s Mia and Alyssa Sutherland’s Ellie,” said Buchanan.

Me too, Luciane. Me too.

The actress continued, “I just find their physicality really interesting, as well as their facial expressions. It’s so simple, but they’re doing so much. But I didn’t want to replicate it. I wanted Tia to be her own person. So, yeah, it was just a collaboration with all departments and trying to figure out who she was.

The mention of Alyssa Sutherland didn’t shock me whatsoever. Almost immediately, Sutherland became a fan favorite for her performance as Ellie/a Deadite in Evil Dead Rise. Despite one hell of a portrayal by star Lily Sullivan, I’d argue Sutherland is the one who makes that movie work. She’s just that good.

While I don’t want to call Levy’s portrayal of Mia/a Deadite in Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead “underrated”, it does feel that way after Sutherland came onto the scene. That said, Levy is incredible. Not only does she have one of the most satisfying moments in the entire franchise (that chainsaw to the face), but her Deadite performance scares the living hell out of me.

Watching Burn, it was clear to me that Buchanan understood the level of Deadite performances that had come before her and wanted to make her own mark. She does so in ways you’ll have to wait to see this weekend. Let’s just say, she practically owns the middle chunk of the movie.

As for Buchanan’s makeup, every Deadite has its own signature look. To look at hers, you’d think it would’ve been a difficult process, but the actress assures me it wasn’t so bad. “I think on the worst day, it was roughly three hours. But the more we did it, we knocked some time off.” Obviously, three hours is still a long time to sit in a chair. Yet that’s nothing compared to the horror stories I’ve heard of actors having makeup applied for six hours or more.

'Evil Dead Burn' Lands a Brutal R Rating from the MPA

Buchanan seems to have delighted in the process, though, offering some details on one of the film’s more memorable images…the headrest stuck in her face. “The whole headrest was weeks and weeks of preparation. The rods were made out of paper straws that they sprayed with metallic paint… It was crazy. I had magnets stuck to my throat and whatnot. It was just fun to explore the process, and it turned out really great.

It really did. And that same enthusiastic energy comes through in Buchanan’s performance, one that captures the giddy maliciousness of the Deadites wonderfully.

In the film, after the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws in their secluded family home. As one by one they are transformed into Deadites—turning the gathering into a family reunion from hell—she comes to discover that the vows she took in life live on… even in death.
