‘Alma and the Wolf’ Director Michael Patrick Jann Talks His Dark New Folk Horror Film
Director Michael Patrick Jann was initially known for directing the cult hit, Drop Dead Gorgeous. But more recently, the filmmaker has pivoted into more obviously dark material. After a stint directing television, Jann came back to feature filmmaking with his 2023 horror Western Organ Trail. Now, his psychological folk horror Alma and the Wolf is on the precipice of release, and this is perhaps the darkest we’ve ever seen the director go, at least when it comes to his feature filmmaking career.
In the film, “After a violent animal attack, paranoia spreads through Spiral Creek. But when Deputy Ren Accord gets too close, his son vanishes, and reality begins to fracture.“
We spoke with Jann about navigating the film’s tone, why he’s drawn to the horror genre, and what attracts him to darker stories.
