‘The Surrender’ Director Julia Max and Actors Colby Minifie and Kate Burton Talk Matriarchy In Their New Horror Film

In her feature film debut, The Surrender, writer and director Julia Max channeled her own experiences to craft her terrifying, single-location film about the desperation of grief. Carrying her writing and translated experiences are stars Colby Minifie and Kate Burton, who deliver incredible performances as a mother-daughter duo trying to escape a hell of their own creation.
In the film,
A fraught mother-daughter relationship is put to a terrifying test when the family patriarch dies, and the grieving mother hires a mysterious stranger to bring her husband back from the dead. As the bizarre and brutal resurrection spirals out of control, both women must confront their differences as they fight for their lives—and for each other.
We spoke with Max, Minifie, and Burton about the intimacy of the film, the inherent catharsis in writing it, and loving our moms.
