‘Sister Midnight’ Director and Star Talk Feral Femininity In Their New Film

In his feature film debut, Sister Midnight, writer and director Karan Kandhari creates a glorious amalgamation of genres all led by the superb Radhika Apte, who embodies Kandhari’s chaotic protagonist with grace and rage. It’s a film that’s almost impossible to describe but is incredible to experience. It’s impossible to not smile from ear to ear while watching Apte dominate the screen.
In the new film:
Rebellious small-town misfit Uma arrives in Mumbai to find herself totally unsuited to life as a housewife. At odds with her prying neighbors and under the constant oppressive noise and heat of the city, she decides to break free from the shackles of domesticity and follow her own path in this bold, unpredictable, and darkly funny debut.
We spoke with Kandhari and Apte about feral femininity, the beauty of Mumbai at night, and more.
