‘Rosario’ Director Felipe Vargas and Star Emeraude Toubia Talk Their Unique Take On Religious Horror

In his feature film debut Rosario, director Felipe Vargas tackles the idea of religious horror through the lens of Palo Mayombe, an Afro-Cuban religion often depicted as evil in Western horror cinema. Here, with his titular star, played by Emeraude Toubia, Vargas paints a much different, nuanced picture of the religion, while also telling a story about navigating your culture and what it means to leave it behind.
In the new film:
Wall Street stockbroker Rosario Fuentes returns to her grandmother’s apartment after her sudden death. While sorting through her Grandmother’s belongings, Rosario uncovers a horrifying secret—a hidden chamber filled with occult artifacts tied to dark generational rituals. As supernatural occurrences plague her, Rosario must confront her family’s buried secrets and face the truth about the sacrifices and choices they made.
We spoke with Vargas and Toubia about Palo Mayombe, filming in Colombia, and tackling the horror genre from a unique perspective.
