‘Sinners’ Stars Li Jun Li and Omar Miller On Researching Their Roots For The New Horror Epic

In Ryan Coogler’s new horror epic, Sinners, Li Jun Li stars as Grace, co-owner of Chow grocery store in Clarksdale, Mississippi. She and her husband are Chinese immigrants and run the store with their 12-year-old daughter Lisa. Miller stars as Cornbread, a sharecropper hired by the Stackhouse twins to act as the doorman for their juke joint. Li and Miller are two crucial players in Coogler’s vampire epic, essential parts to the gorgeous tapestry the filmmaker weaves on screen.
For both Li and Miller, this was more than just a film. It was an opportunity to connect with and learn about their pasts, whether it be Miller’s family connections to the story or Li’s own education on the real Chinese immigrants of the Mississippi Delta. Sinners was more than a horror story; it was a deep connection to the stories of the past.
We spoke with Li and Miller about their own personal connections to the film, performing with a face full of prosthetics, and more.
