Benny Loves You has been a very long and arduous birthing process for director and star Karl Holt. Inspired by the audience reaction to his short film Eddie Loves You about a ferocious Elmo doll, Holt decided to go for broke and turn his killer toy movie into a full-fledged first-time feature. With only a crew of three (including his Mum), Holt and his friends finished principal photography fairly quickly. All things considered. Then, Holt locked himself away for almost four years to bring Benny and a couple of evil robots to life through the magic of CG.
It premiered at Frightfest in the UK. And now it’s coming out here in the states in theaters on Friday. Benny Loves You is now ready to joyfully murder the entire world. In the video interview below, Holt talked about the long journey to get Benny in front of eyeballs, the new trend of killer toy movies including Willy’s Wonderland, and how YOU can get your hands on one of the real stuffed Benny plush dolls that Holt can’t help playing with throughout our conversation.
Check out our chat below. Then find out for yourself this Friday why Benny Loves You is one of the goriest and gushy horror comedies you’ll see all year.
Benny Loves You hits Select Theaters May 7, On Demand May 11 and Blu-ray June 8.
