Take a Bite of Out of This Violent ‘Species’ Footage Ahead of Cannes

WTFilms, which always delivers unique and interesting new horror films, releases the first footage from French director Marion Le Corroller’s body horror thriller Species ahead of its premiere in Cannes Midnight Screenings this week.

Mara Taquin stars as Margot, an aspiring doctor interning at the country’s most competitive ER, where she struggles to survive the crushing pressure of the workplace. Things spiral further when multiple young patients begin arriving with mysterious symptoms just as Margot herself starts undergoing a disturbing metamorphosis.

The cast also includes Karin Viard (Polisse), Kim Higelin (Winter Boy), and Sami Outalbali (Sex Education).

Here’s the first footage, showing a Bloody Burger employee getting infected and going crazy at work. It looks like it has the potential to be super gory and fun.

Speaking to Deadline ahead of the premiere, Le Corroller explained that the film’s inspiration came not from medicine, but from her experience in finance.

“It was far worse. I never managed to adapt myself to this work environment and that was my main inspiration for the film,” she said. “I wanted to tell a story about bodies forced to change, to evolve and adapt to a very toxic and demanding workplace.”

Le Corroller follows in the footsteps of French body horror filmmakers Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) and Julia Ducournau (Raw, Titane).

“They are both very inspiring women. I think French female directors are very politically engaged. Talking about bodies and offering a new way to look at them is a game changer. It’s very important, that us, women, take this responsibility,” she added.

“Aside from Julia and Coralie, my master in cinema is Ari Aster. To me, he is the new king of horror of this century. Beau Is Afraid is a masterpiece and inspires me every day.”

The film is produced by Windy Production and Trésor Films, with WTFilms continuing sales negotiations in Cannes.
