A Dinosaur Stalks the Suburbs in New ‘The End of Oak Street’ Image

“Our house, our neighborhood, our whole street has moved.”

Warner Bros. shared with EW a series of new images from The End of Oak Street, the latest genre offering from sci-fi horror auteur J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions.

The trailer teased another Spielberg throwback for Abrams, which looks like everything he’s done from Super 8 to Cloverfield, only this time directed by It Follows filmmaker David Robert Mitchell!

The film begins after a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports its neighborhood to someplace unknown. The Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings.

In one of the new images, a dinosaur tears down a suburban street after two kids.

“A few years ago, I was walking through our neighborhood in Michigan, just walking down the street, and I was passing by this garage [with a] chain link fence and garbage cans,” director David Robert Mitchell tells Entertainment Weekly. “And I was struck by the image of, like, ‘It’d be really interesting if there was a dinosaur right there.'”

The film kicks off with a mysterious cosmic event that rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports the neighborhood to someplace unknown, where, evidently, dinosaurs run wild, revealed the site ahead of next week’s full trailer debut.

“Just like anybody, the first Jurassic Park movie, I absolutely love,” he added. But for me, my language of dinosaur movies goes back much further,” Mitchell explains. “I’d be lying if I say that that isn’t a movie that I absolutely love because I do. But I wanted to do something different.”

As reference points for Oak Street, Mitchell cites The Twilight Zone, PoltergeistThe Valley of Gwangi, and M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs. He adds that viewers can also expect a little bit of that classic “’80s Amblin vibe” from the film, which is itself set in the early ’80s.

The End of Oak Street has got a killer cast too: Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor with Maisy Stella and Christian Convery.

Find out what’s in the “mystery box” in the theaters and IMAX on August 14.
