Hideo Kojima Claims ‘OD’ Is Scarier Than Any Other Game. We Believe Him

Kojima has a new horror game coming our way in OD, described as “a new kind of horror game” made in collaboration with Jordan Peele (Get Out), and gaming legend Hideo Kojima is out here spiking the hype through the proverbial roof alongside a new image.
In a feature over at EW celebrating Xbox’s 25th anniversary, the outlet caught up with Kojima and learned some exciting details on what fans can expect from the game.
“I wanted to do something new. I wanted to do something different,” Said Kojima. “I had this OD concept since I was working on DS1 [Death Stranding] and I was working on it just by myself. I can’t reveal much detail, but it’s something that no one has ever seen before. A new game system.“
A new kind of gaming system from the man behind Metal Gear Solid, Death Stranding, and the Silent Hill game that was only ever a brief teaser in P.T. before Konami cancelled the project? Sign. Me. Up.
Continued Kojima, “I pitched to many people, to the big companies, and also to the up-and-coming companies. All of them said the same thing. They said that I’m crazy, and that they really don’t understand the concept — that they will not be able to do it.”
Added the gaming legend, “I wanted to go beyond the limit of the ‘scariness’ that other games had reached. It’s a single-player game, and I wanted to make it as scary as possible. But for those that might stop playing when it gets too scary, I have thought of a system that will allow them to keep going. I can’t say much more, because it’ll give too much of a hint on the system, and I could get in trouble for saying too much!”
Remember the excitement over P.T.? Yeah, if Kojima is saying OD goes beyond the scariness of other games, I’ll go ahead and take his word for it. Apt to the title, the idea is for the player to “overdose” on fear, and, well, fear is one drug I’ll happily indulge in (safely, of course).
Sophia Lillis (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), and the late Udo Kier (Flesh for Frankenstein) round out the voice cast of OD.
Check out the new image below (giving major P.T. vibes), along with the teaser shared last September. It doesn’t reveal just what this new gaming system is, but it sure is loaded with eerie atmospherics.
