6 Terrifying Horror Mockumentaries That’ll Make You Question Reality

Mockumentaries have been around for decades and don’t seem to be going anywhere. This is why it’s fun to see filmmakers use the format to give us nightmares. Or, at least a little blood and some cool kills. Either way, this subgenre is one of my favorite parts of the found footage phenomenon. This is why I pulled together a list of some of the many streaming options. Find your good angle and look into the right camera because you might be in a fake documentary.

The Monster Project (2017)

Where You Can Watch: CracklePlexRedboxThe Roku ChannelTubi, and Vudu

Aspiring filmmakers find real monsters for their new film. This leads to demonic kinds of problems for the whole production. This movie takes its foot off of the comedy pedal and as it delivers fucked up images. This Dread original is also streaming on VM Media’s Horror Central YouTube channel in partnership with Dread.

The Dirties (2013)

Where You Can Watch: Prime Video

Two friends decide to make a movie about getting revenge on their bullies. However, one of the friends is willing to go much further than the other one. This dark comedy thriller packs a surprising amount of bite for what seems simple at a glance.

The Hoard (2018)

Where You Can Watch: Tubi and  Vudu

The crew of the show Extremely Haunted Hoarders runs into trouble in Rockford, Ohio. They encounter a collector named Murph Evans and the rest is comedy-horror history. Because this entry is rated PG-13, you can watch it with the youth.

Lake Mungo (2008)

Where You Can Watch: Tubi and Vudu

A girl drowns, and her family begins experiencing unexplained events. They hire a parapsychologist who discovers a lot about the recently deceased kid. Is there a mockumentary more well-known than Lake Mungo? While she didn’t start this subgenre, she’s usually one of the first people think of when they think of a mockumentary.

What We Do In The Shadows (2014)

Where You Can Watch: VOD

Vampire housemates take a newly turned hipster under their wing. This movie paints a universe where vampires are incompetent and played by comedic assassins. It was so funny that it spawned the show of the same name that continues to ask that question. Both versions are stacked with comedic powerhouses and are worth the watch. All current seasons of What We Do In The Shadows  (the TV show) are currently streaming on Hulu.

When The Screaming Starts (2021)

Where You Can Watch: Screambox

A filmmaker thinks getting invited to the home of an aspiring serial killer is what he needs to save his career. This is one of my favorite horror comedies of the decade. I laughed loudly and often at the ridiculousness that is this movie. From watching people get recruited to join a serial killer family to basking in the dark humor, this mockumentary understood the assignment.

These are just six movies out of probably thousands in this very niche subgenre. While the market is oversaturated, I think these all stand out for various reasons. Did your favorite make the cut? Let me know at @misssharai.
