Later this year, FX and Ryan Murphy will finally unleash the much-anticipated tenth (!) season of their hit horror anthology series American Horror Story. And so today we thought it might be fun to take a look back at the previous seasons. Let’s see how they rank – also note this is according to Rotten Tomatoes. As you might imagine, some of the placements are more than a little surprising…

9. AHS: Hotel (64%)

Critics Consensus: Favoring garish style over effective storytelling. The fifth season strands a talented cast at Ryan Murphy’s Hotel.

8. AHS: Murder House (72%)

Critics Consensus: Convoluted yet effective, American Horror Story is strange, gory, and twisted enough to keep viewers hooked.

7. AHS: Cult (73%)

Critics Consensus: Cult intrigues with timely, over-the-top creepiness. And lots of clowns. Despite being hampered by broad political generalizations and occasional holes in the narrative’s logic.

6. AHS: Roanoke (74%)

Critics Consensus: Roanoke takes a surprising turn away from prior AHS formats. Revisiting the deliberate pace of earlier seasons on a spookier, smaller scale. Even if the true-crime format feels overdone.

5. AHS: Apocalypse (75%)

Critics Consensus: Ryan Murphy and his murderers’ row of witchy performers literally save the world (and the American Horror Story franchise) — in the most ambitious season yet.

Critics Consensus: It may turn off new viewers unaccustomed to its unabashed weirdness. But Freak Show still brings the thrills, thanks to its reliably stylish presentation and game cast.

3. AHS: Asylum (84%)

Critics Consensus: Asylum crosses boundaries to shock and scares with sexy subplots. And some innovative takes on current social issues.

2. AHS: Coven (85%)

Critics Consensus: A noteworthy ensemble cast combine with creepy storytelling and campy, outrageous thrills. AHS: Coven is a potently structured fright-fest.

And the best of the best is…

1. AHS: 1984 (87%)

Critics Consensus: A near-perfect blend of slasher tropes and the show’s trademark twists, 1984 is a bloody good time.
