Does ‘Absolute Batman’s New Scarecrow Take Inspiration from ‘Nightbreed’s Masked Killer?

Absolute Batman #19 hits this week with a ton of hype behind it. The series has been moving over 300,000 copies per issue and just keeps getting bigger. Every issue raises the bar, bringing in new villains and reworking them in ways that feel darker, meaner, and a lot more horror-driven than what you usually get from a Batman book. Now it’s Scarecrow’s turn, and based on early looks, this might be one of the creepiest versions yet.
Looking at the design, it’s hard not to think about Nightbreed, the cult horror film from Clive Barker. In that movie, David Cronenberg plays Dr. Philip K. Decker, a masked killer who feels just as disturbing as any of the monsters. He wears a button-eyed mask with a bag-like covering over his head, giving him this blank, unnatural look that’s simple but really effective. He doesn’t look like a traditional horror monster, which is kind of the point. He feels real, and that’s what makes him worse.

That’s where the comparison starts to click. Nick Dragotta’s Scarecrow design ditches the usual straw and farm imagery and leans into something more stripped down and unsettling. The eyes, the mask, the overall shape, it all feels closer to something like Decker than a classic comic book villain. And considering how much Absolute Batman leans into horror, it wouldn’t be surprising if Scott Snyder and Dragotta pulled from films like Nightbreed when building this version.
Even the weapon design adds to it. Batman’s blades (pulled from the ears on his mask) in Absolute Batman #19 are long, clean, and simple. That’s very similar to the knife used by Dr. Philip K. Decker in Nightbreed. It all lines up with what this series has been doing, stripping things down and making them feel more grounded… and mean.
Whether it’s a direct influence or just a coincidence, the overlap is there. And if this is the direction they’re taking Scarecrow, it fits perfectly with what Absolute Batman has become, a straight-up horror take on Gotham where even familiar villains feel completely new.
Absolute Batman #19 is going to be nightmare fuel.
