A24 Debuts First Trailer for Adam Wingard’s ‘Onslaught’ in Theaters Ahead of ‘Backrooms’

I went to the theater last night to see Backrooms and got an unexpected surprise before the movie started: the first trailer for A24‘s upcoming action-horror thriller Onslaught.

The film is directed by Adam Wingard and co-written by Simon Barrett, the duo I worked with on both A Horrible Way to Die and the first two V/H/S films. Since those early days, the pair have gone on to deliver genre favorites like You’re Next and The Guest, while Wingard himself later made the jump to massive studio productions, including Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

I was hoping to have official word from A24 today on when the trailer would be released online so I could share that news as well, but we’re still waiting on a response. Until then, we do have one important update: Onslaught is currently slated to hit theaters on September 4, 2026.

As for the trailer itself, the title appears to be pretty accurate. The footage is an absolute onslaught of action, violence, and outright ultraviolence. It feels very much in line with the kind of crowd-pleasing mayhem that made Adam Wingard‘s The Guest such a fan favorite, only cranked up to an even bigger scale. The trailer barely pauses for breath, unleashing a barrage of gunfights, explosions, hand-to-hand combat, and bone-crunching brutality. It’s a white-knuckle rush packed with guns blazing in every direction and one insane action beat after another. If you’re a fan of Wingard‘s work, this looks like exactly the kind of movie you’ve been waiting for.

In the film, a mother living in a trailer park tries to protect her loved ones from a threat that has escaped from a secret military base, while mercenaries try to contain it.

The cast is stacked with familiar genre faces. Adria Arjona (Hit Man, Blink Twice) stars as the film’s lead. She’s joined by Dan Stevens (The Guest, Cuckoo, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire), Michael Biehn (Aliens, The Terminator), Rebecca Hall (The Night House, Godzilla vs. Kong), Drew Starkey (Queer), Eric Wareheim (Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!), Reginald VelJohnson (Die Hard), and UFC champion Alex Pereira, who reportedly plays a villain known as The Butcher.

While A24 has remained quiet about the film’s marketing rollout, everything we’ve heard about Onslaught suggests that Wingard and Barrett are returning to the kind of lean, aggressive genre filmmaking that made You’re Next and The Guest such fan favorites in the first place. The trailer certainly felt that way.

As soon as A24 releases the footage online, we’ll have it for you here.
