B-Sides: Mothra’s Song Gets a 1990’s J-Pop Makeover

If you’ve ever seen a movie featuring Mothra, then you know the song those two tiny twin fairies serenade their giant bug goddess with. When Toho resurrected her for 1992’s Godzilla vs. Mothra, they decided “Mothra’s Song” needed to get with the times with a peppy Japanese pop makeover.
“Mosura No Uta” (Mothra’s Song) was first heard in 1961’s Mothra, and ever since every movie Mothra has appeared in has boasted a slightly different variation of the song whenever the twin miniature fairy princesses (the “Shobijin”) have to coax the monstrous moth to erupt from her cocoon.
Godzilla’s 1990’s resurgence peaked with the release of the highest grossing Godzilla movie of the era, 1992’s Godzilla vs. Mothra. When the movie was released on laserdisc, a special treat awaited viewers in the form of a music video recapping the entire film set to a version of “Mothra’s Song” given a disgustingly Nineties J-pop musical remix.
If you’ve never seen Godzilla vs. Mothra, you won’t ever have to after watching this music video. If you’re a traditionalist who feels “Mothra’s Song” should only be sung in its purest form, then hearing this jaunty modernized take might make you convert to being a Battra worshipper.
