The biggest news story of 2015 thus far has, of course, been that Neill Blomkamp is directing an Alien film for Fox with Sigourney Weaver returning as Ellen Ripley. But is he just making one film, or does he have a whole new series in mind? Read on for the latest!

In an interview with Empire Online, the director of District 9 and Chappie let slip an unexpected bit of potential news while talking about the upcoming project, seemingly hinting that his idea cannot be contained in merely one film.

If you go back even three or four years, I’ve wanted to make a film in that genre, in that franchise,” said Blomkamp, of course referring to Alien. “I’d come up with an idea, and when I met Sigourney on the set of Chappie, I presumed that she would never want to play Ripley again. Rightly or wrongly, I had that in my head. I also didn’t know where you could go with her, given Alien 3 and 4.”

So when I started speaking to her, I just wanted to know more about the process of making the first two films. The first two are the ones that I care about. Then I started to realize there was a whole film – at least a film, if not more – that still contained Ripley, which I was really surprised by.”

As we know, Blomkamp went on to develop several pieces of concept art after his conversations with Weaver, and it wasn’t long before Fox officially came on board. The studio has thus far only signed on for one film so for now we’ll keep our excitement in check.
