Bands doing covers of older tunes isn’t a new phenomenon. In fact, it’s a practice that goes back for a long, long time. Sometimes it works out exceptionally well, such as with Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” or Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower”. Today, we bring you another cover that we’ll let you decide if it falls into the realm of taking an original song to a new level. Enter horror industrial metal band Dead Animal Assembly Plant, who we’ve teamed up with to premiere their latest music video for “God’s Gonna Cut You Down”, which features additional vocals by Adoration Destroyed.

Originally a traditional folk song, “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” has been covered and adapted by dozens of artists, including Elvis Presley, Moby, Marilyn Manson, and, perhaps most notably, Johnny Cash.

Vocalist and producer Zach Wagner tells Dread Central, “We hope you enjoy our rendition of an old turn of the century folk song that originally warned people of god’s judgment. For us, this is not about a damning god but more the inevitability of death. The great equalizer that binds us together. The video is meant to be a personal introspection on the subject, from the grief to the anger. The isolation. From the stark blackness to the blinding light of reality.

Director Karl Whinnery adds, “We wanted this video to be less a straightforward story, but still have some amazing visuals outside the band performance footage. My favorite shots were both planned and spur of the moment. I love the eye bleeding, the CSI inspired silhouette shots, and death using an oxygen mask. The idea of death facing down the end of his life and looking back at it, questioning. That to me was great material to work with.

The band has a show on December 7 in Portland, OR at Rock Hard PDX. You can follow the band on their official website, Facebook, or Twitter.

You can buy this single via Bandcamp.
