Fans of those damned dirty apes have had much to be happy about these last several years, as the reboot franchise has gotten off to a fantastic start. Set for release in 2017, War for the Planet of the Apes will be the third chapter in the prequel saga, and today the very first image has arrived.

Straight from the set, the behind-the-scenes shot was posted by director Matt Reeves on Twitter, and it calls to mind the memorable finale of 1968’s Planet of the Apes. Reeves recently indicated that the new franchise may eventually run into the old one, and this could be our first tease of that.

The film stars Steve Zahn, Woody Harrelson, Chad Rood, Terry Notary, Amiah Miller, and Gabriel Chavarria. Andy Serkis returns as Caesar.

Matt Reeves, who directed 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, is returning to helm from a script by Mark Bomback. Chernin Entertainment, Dylan Clark, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver are producing the film, shooting in Vancouver.

The storyline is being kept under wraps.

War for the Planet of the Apes will be released on July 14, 2017.
