10-Foot Bobbit Worm Amputates Things in Your Dreams – The Gasp Menagerie

This latest batch of additions to the Menagerie seems to be very heavy on disturbing sea worms. I really need to search the desert instead, as Mongolian Death Worms aren’t nearly as…icky as this batch of critters.

I present to you the Bobbit Worm. The name may or may not be inspired by the infamous Lorena Bobbit, famous for lopping off her hubby’s tender vittles in the night before tossing it out of a moving car. According to the original story in Wired, marine biologists just aren’t certain where the name comes from, although the lore suggests this beast’s ability to sever things is indeed the source.

Growing up to 10-feet long, the Bobbit Worm burrows into the sea floor before it goes all Graboid and shoots out, sometimes with enough force to split a fish in half. It then drags its prey underground into i’s lair to finish ingesting it.

What’s even creepier is those same marine biologists aren’t even sure if this is one animal with variations or a new species with different types. Let’s put that another way: Scientists aren’t even sure exactly what this is. The fact that it sits on the floor of the sea should be no comfort: They have been known to hijack as babies into aquariums, hiding until they’re grown, and then picking off the residents of the tank one by one until discovered.

Check out the video below for some nightmarish action.
