Tom Hardy Wants to Play The Punisher

The Punisher has had a long, blood-soaked history when it comes to movies. First you had the Dolph Lundgren version, which came out at a time when the MPAA deemed it too violent to release. Watching it now, that decision was kind of spellbinding because it’s so friggin’ tame in comparison to what was to come.

Then Thomas Jane assumed the role of Frank Castle for a tepid outing whose best reason for existing was the indie short film The Punisher: Dirty Laundry, featuring Jane. Holy cow, did that underscore what a missed opportunity the Hollywood flick was.

Finally we got Punisher: Warzone, which captured the character, played by Ray Stevenson, in fine form. The best he’s ever been onscreen. The only hitch? Nobody went to see it, and that was blamed in part on the fact that the film was rocking an R rating…. something that I don’t see happening again anytime soon unless the right kind of star power is put into place.

Enter Mad Max: Fury Road star Tom Hardy. In a recent interview with Collider, Hardy dropped the following on fans.

I want The Punisher,” said Hardy when asked about possible superhero movies at Warner Bros. “I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something… I don’t know what I want. I’m not big enough to be The Punisher, I’m 5’9” [Laughs]. Frank Castle, I would love it.

Would it work? It damn well could. What do you guys think? Sound off in the comments section below.
