Friday The 13th Part 3: The Memoriam Documentary (2017)
Starring Paul Kratka, Larry Zerner, Adrienne King
Directed by Kevin R. Phipps
When I look back on Friday the 13th Part 3, it came out in theaters I was only 9 years old, and I thought I was going to lose my shit when I’d heard that it was going to be shown in 3-D, and forget about the fact that I’d never even seen the first two films yet, all I knew was that I would need to perfect my begging technique to my parents in order to check it out. Well, as history would dictate, my begging got me nowhere with Mom and Dad, and I was left to wait until years later to view this masterpiece on VHS, complete with 3-D glasses pilfered from my local supermarket – simply put, it was a glorious sight, and all these years later it still remains one of my favorite installments in the franchise, and when I was given the chance to check out this documentary, I almost leapt out of my seat.
From director Kevin R. Phipps comes Friday The 13th Part 3: The Memoriam Documentary, and it acts as not only a fitting tribute to Richard Brooker (Jason) who passed away in 2013, but as a feature with stories and reflections from some of the film’s stars – hosted by Paul Kratka, and boy am I glad that he was able to get that pesky retractable eye lodged back in his socket. Packed with interviews with names such as Larry Zerner (Shelly), Adrienne King and Caroline Williams, this near 40 minute documentary gives ardent fans of the film some nuggets of information that are both interesting, as well as heartbreaking. I found my blood boiling hearing the story of the cabin that was used in the film being burned down in 2006, but that’s neither here nor there – this is a film created for the fans, by the fans, and it’s a fantastic way to honor the man behind the mask, as well as take us for a woodsy walk down memory lane – if you’re a fan of the Friday series, do yourself a solid favor and check this one out when it becomes available.
