A Closer Walk With Thee (2017)
Starring AJ Knight, Gregory Shelby, Kelsey Boze
Directed by John C. Clark & Brie Williams
Looking to strip the basic fundamentals right out of any religion, the directorial duo of John C. Clark and Brie Williams’ latest film, A Closer Walk With Thee, acts as a “here’s what not to do when worshiping whoever’s sitting in the big chair up in the sky.”
A quartet of missionaries housed in the eastern part of Los Angeles are hell-bent (bad pun, indeed) on spreading what they feel is their “correct” word of God – it’s far from correct, it’s not welcome, and it’s the type of thinking that could very well get someone hurt, especially in this particular locale.
Eli (Shelby) is the lead voice here – good looking fella, smooth with his sermons: exactly the mouthpiece you’d want when attempting to spread the word of the man above. Kara (Megan Hensley) is a young woman who just seems out of place in this environment, and it’s blatantly evident. Lindsey (Boze) is the one who appears to have the most solid head on her shoulders and is unwilling to bow down to the pleasures of the flesh… unlike Jordan (Knight), whose feelings for Eli are a bit more than that of an ardent follower.
There are instances of a torrid (and by some viewpoints, forbidden) relationship, secrets abound, and hell… even a “demonic possession” at one point! The movie has some back-bracing for the LGBT community, and for those who might not agree with the viewpoints… first off, grow up! Secondly, embrace this film for what it is: a frightening and dark foray down a road that some truly fear to travel.
By the time the movie reaches the end credits, there’s going to be a lot of the crimson forcefully extracted from the cast, regardless of their level of devotion – quite the spike in tempo, I might add, but one that was demonstrated extremely well. Performances are solid, especially for a smaller-budgeted film of this nature, and the plot is ripe with subjects that will have fans with multiple standpoints chatting about this one for some time. Do yourself a favor and give this one a look – it very well might surprise you – hell, it did me!
