Fucking Scary Movies
Sheila lied in her bed trying to shake the creepy feeling that someone was watching her. Her husband had got stuck working a double shift at the factory and wouldn’t be home until morning. That left her and her three-year-old daughter Cynthia home alone. She wasn’t one to normally freak herself out, but she had stumbled upon a zombie movie on TV earlier and watched it for a few minutes. A few minutes too long she now thought. The dead were ripping someone in half when she changed it.
“Ugh. I don’t get why people like that shit.” She said.
Cynthia protested, wanting to finish watching the movie.
“It’s bedtime”, Sheila had said shooting her down.
“But Mommy please?” She continued, pleading.
“No honey. It’s time to go to sleep.”
Cynthia stomped off to her room. Sheila followed. She tucked Cynthia in and headed to the bathroom to take a nice hot shower. It always helped her to relax after a stressful day. As the water flowed down upon her she closed her eyes and twisted her neck around, cracking it.
The nice hot shower she had started with was now barely warm. Goosebumps had broken out all over her naked body.
Through the shower curtain she could see it standing there, waiting for her. The smell was the first thing she noticed. She was leaning forward, letting the steaming hot water run down her neck and back when it overpowered her, a revolting smell, a smell of rot, feces and spoiled milk. The smell hit her and she vomited. The puke swirled around the drain before it was out of sight. She stole a quick glance to the left and saw it’s massive chest heave as it took a deep breath. Did it know she knew it was there?
She continued to stand in the shower as the water grew cold. She probably would have stayed there, shaking all night, or at least until the madman reached through and battered her face. One thought finally got her to move. Cynthia.
She griped the curtain as she stared at it’s hulking mass. She flung it open, ready to start swinging. She yelped at what she saw. There was nothing there but her reflection in the mirror above the sink.
It was her mind playing tricks on her. There was nothing there. She closed the curtain and took a deep breath. Fucking horror movies.
“Nothing to worry about honey”, she whispered to herself. She turned and jumped. A centipede crawled across the wall just above the tile. It was a small one, no more than a couple of inches, but it was nasty all the same. Sheila shivered. She turned off the water and got out of the shower. She wrapped a towel around her and left the bathroom still soaking wet. She went to Cynthia’s door and listened. She hoped that her screaming didn’t wake her up. It just seemed so real. She was utterly convinced that there was a madman waiting to kill her.
“Fucking scary movies”, she repeated as she walked to her room. She put her pajamas on, still feeling hidden eyes on her back. Twice she turned quickly, expecting to see someone there. She peeled the covers back on the bed before she turned the lights on. She jumped when she saw a centipede on the sheets. She picked up a slipper and began bashing it. After a dozen or so hits she stopped. She dropped the slipper and picked up the black hair tie she had been hitting. She shook her head and put it on the nightstand. She walked over and held the light-switch.
“Fucking scary movies”, she said as she flicked it off. She leaped into the bed and pulled the covers up to her chin.
As she lay in bed, Sheila’s eyes scanned the darkness of the bedroom, looking for a sign of life, or more to the point, death. In the dark she saw lumbering zombies, waiting to rip her apart and eat her flesh. Her imagination was so vivid that she could almost smell their wet, decomposing bodies stumbling towards her.
“Fucking horror movies”, she thought as she finally drifted into sleep.
There was movement. Slowly someone crawled into the room, quietly, making sure they didn’t wake up the sleeping woman. It was slow but steady work. In all it took about ten minutes to crawl the fifteen feet to the bed. When they got to the bed they listened for the shallow breathing that was a sure sign of deep sleep. Satisfied they stood up and stared at the woman lying in the bed, so pretty. They reached a hand up and rubbed her cheek. The woman made a low murmur.
They held the long blade up in the air and in one quick downward motion drove it through her neck into the mattress.
Sheila’s eyes flew open and she gasped for breath. She reached up and grabbed the handle of the knife and touched it briefly. A shrill whistling sound came from the wound as she tried to breathe. She stared at the ceiling and death took her as she thought of her daughter.
The killer stared at the lifeless body for a moment before turning and leaving the bedroom. They walked a few steps down the hallway to an open door. They paused before walking into the room. They stood before the toddler sized bed and sighed. Even in the darkness they could see the cartoon characters on the sheets. A large smile came across their face as she crawled into the bed and laid down. She picked up Maddy, her favorite doll and gave her a big hug and kiss. Maybe Mommy should have let her stay up and watch the scary movie instead of being a bitch. It wasn’t like what she was seeing on TV was real. It was just a fucking movie. Hopefully Daddy would never make that mistake.
