Oldboy Takes a Beating at the Box Office; Hunger Games RulesJust $1.25 million over five days. Yep, that’s the dismal take Spike Lee’s Oldboy (review here) brought in during the holiday weekend. Sure, it only opened in 583 locations, but still. Read on for details.

Box Office Mojo reported the news that Lee’s remake of the Korean classic took in just $1.25 million for the five-day frame ($850,000 three-day). That’s well below expectations and really just a fraction of the film’s $30 million budget. Oldboy came in 17th in the top 20.

In the number one spot is The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with a weekend gross of $74,500,000 (three-day), bringing it to a whopping $296,500,000 since its release. It also obliterated a Thanksgiving weekend record. With $110.1 million from Wednesday to Sunday, the blockbuster sequel destroyed the five-day Thanksgiving weekend record held for the past 12 years by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ($82.4 million).

Could all the negative press and weird goings-on have added to Oldboy‘s woes? Are people finally sick of pointless remakes? A combination of both maybe? Tell us what you think below.
