‘Soft Liquid Center’ Trailer: A Haunting Look At Life After Abuse

Soft Liquid Center

Horror films are meant to entertain, yes, but they’re also meant to convey a message about what terrifies us. Those fears may be as universal as the dark, the paranormal, or spiders. But, horror can also speak to more specific fears and experiences, ones that haunt our pasts and our nightmares. The directing duo known as Perry Home Video, paired with co-writer Steph Holmbo, take that idea to heart in their new film Soft Liquid Center, a lo-fi tale of the supernatural that speaks to the experience of rebuilding your life after suffering years of abuse.

In the film:

Steph, a newly single woman on the cusp of a better life, finds herself in a dangerous and peculiar situation not of her making. As she begins to unravel the mysteries of her predicament, she grapples with a controlling, manipulative force hellbent on her undoing in this unique and unorthodox tale of loneliness, haunting, and abuse.

It’s a beautifully disturbing watch as Holmbo, who co-wrote the film using her own experiences, also stars as practically the only character. We’re watching her process pain and trauma both as a character and as a person in almost real-time, a feat that not many films can accomplish.

In my review of the film from the 2023, Chattanooga Film Festival, I wrote “[Soft Liquid Center is] an abuse survivor’s worst nightmare manifested on screen as Perry Home Video truly creates a liminal nightmare world.” If there’s an indie title you watch this year, folks, it’s this one.

Steph Holmbo, Paul Michel, Alex Palkovic, Mercedez Prince Davis, Michael Isaacs, Andy Hamilton, Davidia Turner, Brenda, Nat Gove, Tom Gleason, and Rachel Turner star in the film.

Soft Liquid Center comes to VOD on December 12, 2023, from Gravitas Ventures.
