The 10 Horror Films With The Most “Disturbing Atmospheres” Ever, According to Reddit

disturbing

We’ve talked a lot here at Dread Central about horror movies that capture the perfect autumnal vibe. Movies that scream “pumpkin patches” and “orange-colored leaves” and get you in that spooky spirit. But what about the movies with slightly less alluring atmospheres? Dare we say, disturbing atmospheres? What about the movies that make you queasy and yet you can’t look away? Luckily, Reddit came in clutch with a handy list of bleak recommendations for those of us looking to get Big Sad.

One of the top choices on the list is the recent Shudder release Caveat which features one of the scariest moments of last year. The film follows a man desperate to make some money after he’s released from prison. So he takes an incredibly sketchy job watching after a young woman who lives on an isolated island in the middle of nowhere. But that’s not all. He has to wear a contraption fitted with bells to alert her of his every move, plus that contraption is attached to a chain. Basically, he can’t escape even if he wants to. And still, he takes the job because that’s what capitalism does to us, folks. Everything about this movie reeks of decay and that stuffed rabbit is the stuff of nightmares.

Another surprise entry on this list is the bizarre take on the zombie genre, Pontypool. But here, contagion doesn’t spread through bodily fluids, but through language. It’s definitely one of the more esoteric horror films of recent memory, but that’s what makes it so good. Stephen McHattie plays a shock jock on a local Canadian radio show who starts getting disturbing calls to the station. The film is contained in one small space, but the audio of the town collapsing outside is just as harrowing as any visuals. It’s a gorgeous and disturbing example of how to use sound design to the utmost effect.

These are the ten horror movies with the most disturbing atmospheres according to Reddit:

  • Possum
  • Caveat
  • Bug
  • The Lodge
  • The Ritual
  • Mad God
  • 30 Days of Night
  • Possessor
  • Possession
  • Pontypool

I am a 30 Days Of Night apologist so I was thrilled to see it make an appearance in this post. Sure, this tale of an Alaskan town getting massacred by a clan of ancient vampires during their month of no sunlight isn’t perfect. But everything about it is bleak with a capital B. Blood-drenched snow is always a stunning image, and director David Slade uses it to incredible effect in this Josh Hartnett vehicle.
