‘Martyrs Lane’ Exclusive Clip Teases A Ghostly Friendship

Fresh out of Fantasia, Ruth Platt’s haunting tale Martyrs Lane hit Shudder just yesterday. We’re excited to share an exclusive clip to get you excited about this ghost story.

Synopsis:

In this unsettling ghost story, Leah, 10, lives in a large, old house with her family but can’t quite work out why her mother seems so distant. At night she is visited by a mysterious guest, who might be able to give her some answers. With a new challenge every night, Leah is rewarded with bits of knowledge that, when pieced together, threaten to shine a dangerous light on both the truth in her nightmares and of the world she lives in.

Martyrs Lane is an expansion of Platt’s 2019 short film of the same name. In an interview with Pop Matters, Platt explained her personal connection to the film:

“The seed of it came from my childhood memories. It’s not autobiographical, but it’s that seed of being a child in an adult world, and not knowing, then having visceral violent nightmares, and not being able to make sense or talk about those. It fits comfortably in the horror genre, but it’s more implicit and subtle than explicit.”

It’s her third feature film, and second foray into the horror space. Her first film, The Lesson, is a horrific story of a teacher at his breaking point. Her second, The Lesson, is a much more comedic piece. Before pivoting to directing, Platt worked in front of the camera, appearing in films such as Jane Campion’s The Pianist.

This film features Kiera Thompson and Sienna Sayer as the two main young girls. Denise Gough, Steven Cree, Hannah Rae, and Anastasia Hille also star.

Martyrs Lane is now streaming exclusively on Shudder.
