Midnight SURPRISE! Shudder Just Released Acclaimed Indigenous Zombie Flick BLOOD QUANTUM

As the clock struck Midnight on the East Coast, Shudder surprised streamers with the unannounced release of the acclaimed Indigenous zombie flick Blood Quantum! A rare zombie film that flips expectations, Blood Quantum positions a community historically beset by real-life plagues and genocide as the survivors and victors of the land, now up against the rest of the world who are left ravaged.

Check out the trailer and read more about Blood Quantum below.

Synopsis:
The dead are coming back to life outside the isolated Mi’gmaq reserve of Red Crow, except for its Indigenous inhabitants who are immune to the zombie plague. Traylor, the tribal sheriff, must protect his son’s pregnant girlfriend, apocalyptic refugees, and reserve riffraff from the hordes of walking white corpses.

Jeff Barnaby is a First Nations filmmaker born on the Mi’gmaq reserve, where both Blood Quantum and his debut feature, the cult-hit Rhymes for Young Ghouls, take place. He is the writer, director, editor and composer of Blood Quantum, which opened TIFF’s Midnight Madness program in 2019 to both audience and critical acclaim. His films frequently cast from within the Indigenous community and paint a stark and scathing portrait of post-colonial Indigenous life and culture – in this case, painting it in blood.

Starring: Michael Greyeyes (True DetectiveFear the Walking Dead), Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant), Kiowa Gordon (The Twilight Saga), Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Olivia Scriven (Degrassi: Next Class & The Next Generation), Brandon Oakes (Rhymes for Young Ghouls) and Gary Farmer (Dead Man)

Like many films Blood Quantum has had its theatrical run impeded by the global contagion crisis – an ironic twist for an undead outbreak film to be blocked by a virus outbreak – and it goes without saying that never before has the zombie genre been so chillingly relevant. It is being released as a tentpole of Shudder’s “Halfway to Halloween Month” programming, alongside Cursed Films and new seasons of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs and Australian horror series Wolf CreekThis month Shudder is also continuing their extended 30-day free trial for new members with promo code SHUTIN.
