This Day in Horror: Happy Birthday Matthew Lillard

Born on this day in 1970: actor Matthew Lillard

Lillard is best known in the genre space as Stu Macher in seminal slasher flick Scream. Stu was the accomplice of Billy Loomis, who donned the Ghostface mask and wreaked havoc on the kids of Woodsboro. Stu was killed by Sidney, the film’s “final girl.”

In a podcast interview in 2009, Lillard told Bob Bendick that Stu was originally supposed to be the killer in Scream 3. He survived his death and went to prison, and was orchestrating a new spate of Ghostface murders at Woodsboro High School. Columbine occurred, and the script was changed to avoid violence in high school. Lillard did, however, have uncredited background cameos in Scream 2 and Scream 4.

Besides Scream, Lillard appeared in Thir13en Ghosts as psychic assistant Dennis Rafkin, and he played Shaggy in the 2002 live-action version of Scooby-Doo, as well as the 2004 sequel. In 2009, Lillard was chosen as the official voice of Shaggy in all Scooby-Doo cartoons and animated films.
