Producer Sam Raimi (Crawl) and director Nicolas Pesce’s remake of The Grudge crawled into a theater near you this past weekend. And today we’ve learned that the film scored $11.3M opening weekend … and a horrific F Cinemascore grade from audiences. Ouch.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, it only scored a mere 17% over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Dull and derivative, the rebooted Grudge wastes a talented cast and filmmaker on watered-down scares that may leave viewers nursing grievances of their own.
This new version of The Grudge begins after a young mother murders her family in her own house, a single mother and detective try to investigate and solve the case. Later, she discovers the house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death.
Directed by Nicolas Pesce from a screenplay he co-wrote along with Jeff Buhler (Pet Sematary) based on Ju-On: The Grudge by Takashi Shimizu, this new version of The Grudge is produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Taka Ichise. It stars Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye, and Jacki Weaver. It is NOW PLAYING at a theater near you.
