GODZILLA 2 and DOCTOR SLEEP Do the Release Date Shuffle

Some quick news for you regarding the release dates of two hotly anticipated flicks: Godzilla 2 and Doctor Sleep. One has moved back and the other finally has one.

Fans of the King of the Monsters will have to wait a little longer to see their favorite mon-star back on the big screen in all his big budget Hollywood computer effects glory battling rival daikaiju Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Deadline reports Legendary’s Godzilla 2 has officially been moved from March 22, 2019 to May 31, 2019.

The reason for the release date shuffle to the post-Memorial Day weekend stems from Warner Bros’ Six Billion Dollar Man woes. Their tentpole theatrical updating of the cult 1970’s TV series The Six Million Dollar Man set to star Mark Wahlberg has been delayed due to the loss of the film’s original director. With it begin pushed back to June 5, 2020 WB needed another film to fill that summer blockbuster slot. Better call Godzilla!

The new May 31st release date for Godzilla 2 sets up a potential Godzilla vs. Blumhouse battle as the hit-making horror studio currently has an untitled feature slated to open the same week.

Meanwhile, Doctor Sleep, Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s sequel to The Shining, finally has an official release date: January 24, 2020. Doctor Sleep is currently the only film slated for that weekend. That’ll probably change in the year-and-a-half to come.
